In the shetlands

We had a very pleasant boat journey to the Shetlands. We treated ourselves to a 'fine dining' meal, very good and so cheap compared with Norway. Then were rocked to sleep by the waves. Arrived in Lerwick this morning and are staying in a hostel for a couple of nights before starting on the cycle route again.

We originally thought we wouldn't stay here very long but there is a lot to see, with remains of habitation since the stone age and lots of wildlife, especially birds. We haven't yet booked our onward journey as we are still not sure how long we want to stay. This would normally be fine but the Tall Ships race is on and they are going to be calling in to the Shetlands. We are not sure what affect this will have on ferries.

Today we went to the Shetland museum which gave a good overview of the history of the islands, including that the Vikings pretty well wiped out the previous inhabitants, though genetics have shown that some of the women were taken to Iceland. I loved visiting Iceland, but being carried off in a Viking ship does not sound appealing. Poor things!
