Sand and Ascension Day

This area is just dominated by sand.  The tip of Denmark is growing at a sufficient rate that it is now onto its third lighthouse. The first two being redundant as now too far inland. Standing on the beach in Grennan you could see why. The sand was constantly being blown by the wind. Just in the time we padddled my shoes began filling up with sand,

One of the highlights of this section of  Denmark was the 15km ride along the beach from Blokhus to Lokken. Our book said keep 20 metres from the sea and we nearly gave up, as the tyres just kept sinking into the sand. then we saw a woman coming the other way just next to the sea, on a fallingg tide. After that we were off. You did have to watch out for car tyre and sand surfing tracks that churned up the sand but otherwise it was great.

Yesterday, Thursday, was Ascension Day and a public holiday. The camp site was more lively with families, the cycle paths were full of families and Skagen had a festive feel. Down at the harbour parties were in full swing on the expensive yachts and our restaurant by the harbour was filling up with men from those parties. A very cheerful atmosphere. What it was like later on, or this morning, we do not know. We cycled the 13km back to our campsite. A pleasant ride in the evening, with deer crossing the path and a beautiful sunset. We are finding that it is never really quite dark now, so it is easy to forget how late it has got in the evening.

Today we start on a different cycle route, no 5 to Frederikshaven. We were on route 1 all the way from entering Denmark and it finished in Grenen, the tip of Denmark without a murmur. Just ended in a car park. No sign to say well done, you've finished route 1. Ah well, the sea was very dramatic, as Tom said in the previous post.
