shetlands

This has to be a short post.  We are about to leave Haroldswick, at the Northern end of the Northern-most island, Unst.  Packing up, and internet connection suddenly comes through.

So, more detail later but a quick bit now.

We had been travelling around in Shetland since Wednesday and have really enjoyed doing so.  We have been to the island of Mousa, to the West to a wonderful cliff walk, up through Yell and Unst to this place and walk on the cliffs yesterday, where there were puffins in large n,mbers and gannets in stupendous numbers and a lot else that we are not good at identifying.  We were booked on a boat trip to Muckle Flugga lighthouse, but that was concelled.  We saw the lighthouse on our walk, the Northern most point, except a rock stack, in the UK.

Today we cycle South in the rain, which is expected to be continuous.  We were unable to get a ferry to Orkney on Friday, cancelled because of some tall ships, so are going on Wednesday and this gives us shorter time to see the South of Shetland.

More to come.

  1. Hi, Katherine and Tom.
I'm really pleased to read that you've made it through Norway and on to Norwick, Shetland now; that is a strange place to complete the UK ride, isn't it - I had to stand a discarded fish crate on end to put the camera on for a self-timer shot, as there was no one anywhere in sight to take a photograph for me!
I'm glad too that you evidently made it out to Braewick and beyond; I took in that deviation too and found Northmavine a real treat.
I noted that you enjoyed Moussa too, so you evidently have been south from Lerwick, even if the early ferry connection prevented you from getting down to Sumburgh.
I hope that by now you're enjoying Orkney - it's so special, I think.
Good luck with the trip south now,
    Humphrey
