Norwegian pastries and vacuum cleaners

Norwegian pastries are every bit as good as Danish pastries and sometimes better. Why do we call them Danish pastries and not Norwegian? And vacuum cleaners? We were told that was the literal translation of the name of some rather good Swedish cakes: marzipan with chocolate ends and a nutty filling. We were told that it also came in an ice-cream, but unfortunately we were about to cycle the last mile to get the ferry out of Sweden and it was either ice-cream or ferry. Being rather boring we chose the ferry,

  1. Perhaps because most Norwegian pastries come from Denmark. In Finland they are called Viennese bread.

    "Vacuum cleaners" are called so, because the story goes that in the end of the day, the baker took all the cake crumbs and made a batter of it, formed and covered with marzipane and chocolate...
