Methods of transport

We have seen all the usual forms of transport including trolley buses. But here are some more memorable.

Sundays are motor bike days. In Sweden they were large and noisy and in groups of 4 to 8. In Norway they are more usually in 2s or 3s. Bicycles come in all forms, but there are plenty of extremely fast ones shooting effortlessly up hill. Particularly in Holland and Germany there were all sorts of trailers for carrying the children but we have also seen them here. There was also someone taking their dog up the hill in a trailer. Then there was the dog attached to the front of the bike and pulling the bike up the hill. That seemed a better use of resources. If bikes don't appeal there have been lots of people going very fast on roller blades. One in Sweden was going even faster by holding on the to pillion passenger on a motor bike. We didn't see whether they survived. going up hill on roller blades is a little harder, so some people use sticks to push themselves up. Then for the cross country ski enthusiasts, there are mini wooden 'skis' on  wheels pushed along with sticks as for skiing.

On the whole people have been extremely courteous on the roads and cars wait for cyclists to go first across junctions. Standing on a corner wondering which road to take, tends to cause the traffic to grind to a halt while they wait for you to cross. We are going to have to watch it when we return to Britain. People have also been very helpful when we have set off in the wrong direction, or are looking lost. In fact people  have gone out of their way to help, including a man from whom we are directions to the camp site, who said "Wait a minute", went into his house and came back with a guide book to the area that he had written and published. It was rather good.

I shall miss Scandinavia.
