Pies, scones and cake

In the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia, we did not find any (savoury) pies, so anticipated getting to Scotland where they are (I believe) celebrated - this is the small individual pie with a rather good and particular pastry.  I recalled the mutton pies from previous visits to Scotland.  There are pies alright and we have enjoyed them very much, although so far no mutton ones.  The beef pie has been my favourite.  There are macaroni cheese pies, beef pies, and Katherine tried a bean, potato and cheese pie.  She was disappointed.  For some reason she seems to have expected green beans; most of the pie contents were potato, the beans were not green one and the cheese was there only in  token quantities.  She is more experimental than I am and has also tried a chicken curry pie.   Our friends in Aberdeen warned us off the macaroni cheese variety and so far we have followed that advice, thought may sometimes try one followed by a deep-fried Mars bar.

Scotland is also good for scones, and Scandinavia is not.  Cake has been excellent everywhere we have been.  The energetic output of cycling a sizable distance every day has made it possible to indulge and also to lose weight.  I have lost 5kg since we left home.  So recommend to anyone wanting to lose weight.

BTW we are now in Orkney.  More on this in the next post.
